The mistake designers make every summer

Helping Design Professionals Streamline, Simplify & Succeed

Hello Friends!

Summer has officially arrived. For my Canadian Designers, we will be celebrating Canada Day on July 1. It's crazy how quickly June zipped by. Let's talk about what summer is looking like.....

For many designers, this season naturally looks different. Maybe your kids are home from school. Maybe your family is heading to the cottage every weekend. Perhaps you're welcoming houseguests, taking a much-needed vacation, or intentionally scheduled fewer projects to create some breathing room.

Or maybe...

Your pipeline has simply slowed down.

Over the past few weeks, one conversation has come up again and again with designers:

"Things were so busy at the beginning of the year... and now inquiries have slowed to a trickle."

If that's you, you're not alone.

The reality is that many creative entrepreneurs live in what's often called the feast or famine cycle.

When work is pouring in, we're consumed with client meetings, sourcing, procurement, site visits, and installations. Marketing stops. Systems get ignored. We tell ourselves we'll work on the business once things settle down.

Then suddenly...

The projects wrap up.

The inbox goes quiet.

And we're scrambling to find the next client.

It doesn't have to be this way.

Summer can actually become one of the most strategic seasons in your business if you choose to use it intentionally.

Now, let’s dive in! πŸš€

Tips, Tools & Takeaways for Designers

3 Ways to Streamline Your Business This Week

βœ… Define Your Unique Advantage

One of the biggest mindset shifts I've learned from my business coach, Racheal Cook back in 2019 is that sustainable businesses aren't built by serving everyone.

They're built at the intersection of three things:

Your Passion
What work genuinely lights you up? Kitchens? New builds? Virtual design? Space planning? Color consultations?

Your Purpose
What transformation do you consistently create for your clients? Saving them time? Reducing overwhelm? Guiding renovations? Creating highly functional family homes?

Your Peeps
Who are the clients that value your expertise, trust your recommendations, and happily pay your fees?

When those three overlap...

You've found your unique advantage.

And that's where marketing becomes easier, referrals become stronger, and your business becomes much more sustainable.

βœ… Use the Quiet Season to Build Your Pipeline

When projects are busy, marketing often disappears.

Instead of waiting until September to start promoting your services, use this slower season to work ahead.

Consider:

Refreshing your website

Updating your portfolio

Scheduling a month’s worth of social media

Writing newsletters

Asking past clients for testimonials Creating a downloadable guide to grow your email list

Following up with old inquiries

Remember:

Marketing done today fills your calendar 60–90 days from now.

βœ… Create Revenue Between the Big Projects Not every offer needs to be a six-month renovation.

What smaller services could keep cash flowing throughout the year?

Ideas include:

  • Designer-for-a-Day consultations
  • Kitchen or bathroom design reviews
  • Paint consultations
  • Seasonal styling
  • Holiday decorating
  • Furniture layout consultations
  • Virtual design packages
  • Ongoing design retainers

A diversified service menu creates more predictable revenue while introducing clients to your larger offerings.

πŸ“Œ The Sweet Spot Strategy by Racheal Cook

If you've ever felt trapped in the feast or famine cycle, this book offers a practical framework for building a business around work you love, clients you enjoy, and systems that create consistency instead of chaos.

πŸ“Œ Free Exercise

Take 20 minutes this week and answer these questions:

  • Which projects generated the highest profit?
  • Which projects gave me the most energy?
  • Which clients would I happily work with again?
  • Which projects drained me?
  • What services do I never want to offer again?

You may be surprised how much clarity comes from simply looking back before planning ahead.

A weekly blueprint for interior designers who want to build a business as thoughtfully designed as the homes they create. a note from my desk.... One morning this week, I found myself feeling anxious. It wasn't because I was behind on deadlines or overwhelmed with client work. It was because my morning was... quiet. As business owners, it's amazing how quickly our minds can equate busy with successful. A slower morning can make us wonder if we should be doing more, finding more, chasing more....

A weekly blueprint for interior designers who want to build a business as thoughtfully designed as the homes they create. a note from my desk.... As interior designers, we spend countless hours thinking about how our clients will experience their space. We consider flow, function, beauty, and purpose. We ask how a family will live in the home, how they'll move through it, and how each room can better support their everyday life. Yet when it comes to our own businesses, many of us simply......
