The Leadership Conversation Our Industry Needs

Helping Design Professionals Streamline, Simplify & Succeed

Hey Lovely!

There’s a lot of conversation in our industry around design, aesthetics, and client experience. But I think one of the most overlooked conversations is leadership.

Not just leadership when things are going well.
But leadership in the everyday moments.

Leadership in how you speak to your team.
Leadership in whether you give credit.
Leadership in whether you train someone properly instead of expecting them to “just figure it out.”
Leadership in how you communicate with vendors and trades when projects get stressful.
Leadership in how you show up for your clients when timelines shift or budgets tighten.

Because the truth is, people remember how they felt working with you long after the project is over.

And culture; whether inside a design firm or on a job site; is built one interaction at a time.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what healthy leadership actually looks like in the design industry. Not perfection. Not performative positivity. But thoughtful leadership rooted in respect, communication, accountability, and care.

Which leads me to this week’s conversation…

Tips, Tools & Takeaways for Designers

3 Ways to Streamline Your Business This Week

Give credit publicly.

Your team notices. Your trades notice. Your clients notice. Acknowledging the people behind the scenes builds trust, morale, and loyalty. Great leadership is not about being the smartest person in the room; it’s about making people feel valued inside the room

Training takes time, but confusion costs more.

One of the biggest mistakes I see in design businesses is expecting new hires to absorb everything through osmosis.

Clear systems, documentation, onboarding, and communication are not “extra work.” They are leadership tools.

Your energy sets the tone.

How you respond under pressure matters.

The way you communicate during stressful moments on projects often becomes the culture of the business. Calm leadership creates calmer projects, stronger relationships, and better collaboration across the board.

2 Resources to Check Out

📌 Create a “Ways We Work” document for your team. Fancy word; SOP

This doesn’t need to be complicated. Start simple:

  • Communication expectations
  • Project workflows
  • Client standards
  • Response times
  • File organization
  • Vendor/trade processes

Clarity reduces tension.

📌 Before your next team meeting or client call, ask yourself:

“How do I want people to feel after interacting with me?”

Not impressed.
Not intimidated.
Not managed.

Supported. Respected. Clear. Safe. Inspired.

That question changes everything.
